Missoula Housing Authority receives $1,063,971 from HUD

Missoula Housing Authority (MHA) has been awarded $1,063,971 to help people experiencing homelessness. MHA is one of 17 organizations in Montana to receive a grant award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) $2.8 billion in Continuum of Care (CoC) Competition Awards. These awards are to help individuals and families experiencing homelessness move into permanent housing.

MHA will use the grant to continue funding Permanent Supportive Housing programs in the Missoula area. Permanent Supportive Housing combines affordable housing assistance with voluntary support services to address the needs of chronically homeless people. The services are designed to build independent living and tenancy skills and connect people with community-based health care, treatment, and employment services. PSH is proven successful.

“We house about 150 people each year through this program, people who were on the street or in shelters, sometimes for decades,” says Jim McGrath, Director of HUD Programs at MHA. “For many of them, this housing assistance and support is the difference that makes a difference, and they now lead stable lives in our community.”

The grant runs from May through April. The Missoula Housing Authority reapplies annually to HUD for this program.

The grant allows MHA and its partners, such as mental health providers, to help house and keep housed this challenging population.

Linkages to these services are coordinated through the Missoula Coordinated Entry System which provides intake and assessment. Full details and the press release available here: https://www.hud.gov/press/press_releases_media_advisories/hud_no_23_062
