Section 8 is a rental assistance program that pays the difference between what a client can afford in rent and what an apartment costs in Missoula, Montana. Section 8 gives families an opportunity to find an approved house or apartment to rent in the private market and negotiate a lease directly with the owner. MHA then pays a portion of the monthly rent directly to the landlord. MHA assists approximately 750 households through this extremely popular program.
There are two types of Section 8 assistance, tenant-based and project based. Tenant based Section 8 moves with the customer. Meaning the customer can move to another city or state to take a better job, be closer to family or continue education and take the rental assistance with them. Project Based Section 8 is attached to a particular housing unit or housing development.
